Series Wound DC Motor

Series wound DC motor speed varies automatically with the load. It increases as the load decreases. Motor characteristics are graphed for speed, horsepower and torque. You can see information on wound field DC motor designs and ratings here.

The series motor provides the starting torque required for moving large loads. Common uses of the series motor include crane hoists, bridge and trolley drives on large overhead cranes and traction motors used to drive trains. Series wound motors are designed to get massive amounts of weight moving.
